Is Bakuchiol Really a “Natural Retinol”?

TLDR: Yes. If you’re over the age of 25, we’d bet our entire skincare cabinet that you’ve heard of retinol. It’s basically the anti-aging ingredient that’s been buzzing in the beauty world for years. It earned the spotlight for its ability to boost collagen production and increase cell turnover (aka smooth fine lines and wrinkles). Sounds pretty great, right? It is, except for the fact that it’s extremely harsh – even at its lowest concentration – and especially if you have dry or sensitive skin.

Here at Beauty H-A-C, we don’t use Retinol in our products. We use an ingredient that – in our expert opinion – is even better...

What is bakuchiol?
Meet bakuchiol, an all-natural ingredient that has you “bak.” (BTW, it’s pronounced buh-koo-chee-all.) It’s a chemical compound that is extracted from the bakuchi plant seeds and used for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial properties. In skincare, it’s used as a plant-based retinol alternative that delivers the same line-softening, skin firming, texturizing results as a Retinol, without the potential irritation. It’s been used in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for a long time but has only just begun to catch buzz in the beauty world over the past couple of years.

What else does it do?
Like retinol, bakuchiol boosts collagen and elastin production and reduces fine lines and wrinkles. But, unlike retinol, bakuchiol has no harsh side effects on the skin. It’s also been shown to reduce acne by fighting inflammation, hyperpigmentation, and roughness.

When will you see results?
You’ll see some immediate skin-plumping, brightening, and radiance, especially when used in tandem with a facial roller, like our Beauty H-A-C System. But, by now you know, we believe in measuring the long-term results of our skincare products (link to blog number 3 -Quick tips to testing new products). With consistent use, you’ll see more benefits – like the reduction of the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles – over the course of four to eight weeks.

When it comes to using natural ingredients, our philosophy is this: If it’s clinically proven and holistic, you should always prioritize its use over a harsher chemical compound. You can give bakuchiol a try in any of our Beauty H-A-C products.
